Who we are
When we say "we" or "us" in this notice, we mean the team behind Seripe and the trusted partners who help us run the service.
Note: We're in the process of establishing a legal entity. Once registered, we'll update this section with our company name, registration number, and registered address.
What this notice covers
This notice explains what personal information we collect when you use the Seripe app, why we collect it, who we share it with, and what rights you have. We've tried to keep things clear and straightforward.
Age restriction
Seripe is for users aged 18 and over. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If we find out we have, we'll delete it. If you're a parent or guardian and think your child has signed up, please get in touch.
What we collect
When you sign up
We collect your name, email address, profile photo (optional), and a password.
Your location
Location is central to how Seripe works — we need it to show you where products are. We collect precise GPS data from your device (with your permission), any locations you enter manually (like postcodes or addresses), and an approximate location based on your IP address.
What you post
When you contribute to Seripe — posting sightings, writing reviews, uploading photos, or filling in details like busyness levels and amenities — we store that content along with your username, location, and the time you posted. Photos and other files you upload may contain embedded metadata (such as location or device information), which we may process or remove.
All user posts on Seripe are public. Other users can see what you've shared, so please don't include sensitive personal details in your contributions. When uploading photos, please be mindful that your images may capture other people. You should avoid posting photos that clearly identify individuals without their consent. If someone appears in a photo and would like it removed, they can contact us and we will take it down.
If you're a business owner
If you register as a business owner to manage your listing, we may ask for additional information to verify your business. This could include your business name and address, contact details, and verification documents such as proof of address or business registration.
Technical and usage data
Like most apps, we automatically collect some technical information: your IP address, device type and operating system, what you do in the app (searches, page views, interactions), and crash or performance data.
Why we collect it
Here's a summary of what we use your data for and our legal basis under UK GDPR:
| What we do | Why it's lawful |
|---|---|
| Run the app — showing maps, product locations, and user contributions | Necessary to provide the service you signed up for (contract) |
| Display your posts publicly on the platform | Our legitimate interest in operating a crowd-sourced platform, and your consent when posting |
| Verify business owner accounts | Our legitimate interest in maintaining trust and accuracy |
| Improve and develop the app | Our legitimate interest in making Seripe better |
| Send you notifications or marketing messages | Your consent (you can opt out any time) |
| Keep the platform safe and prevent misuse | Our legitimate interest in security |
| Create aggregated, de-identified analytics for business customers (see below) | Our legitimate interest in sustaining and developing our business |
Third-party services
We don't do everything ourselves. We work with trusted service providers who help us operate Seripe, including:
- Mapping and location providers — to display maps, product locations, and convert postcodes into map coordinates
- IP lookup providers — to determine your approximate location
- Hosting and database providers — to store your data securely
These providers process your data on our behalf and are expected to protect your data in line with applicable data protection law.
Aggregated analytics for businesses
We create aggregated insights from how people use Seripe — things like footfall trends, product demand patterns, stock availability over time, and busyness data for particular areas or categories. We sell these insights to business customers to help them understand consumer demand and make better decisions. This can also benefit you directly — for example, if many users are searching for a product in an area where it's not currently available, a distributor could use that insight to stock it there.
Before sharing this data, we take steps to reduce the risk of anyone being identified. These steps include aggregating data across multiple users, removing direct identifiers (like names and email addresses), and generalising location and time data where appropriate.
While we work to minimise the risk of re-identification, we cannot guarantee it is impossible in all circumstances. For this reason, we treat this processing as covered by data protection law and rely on our legitimate interest in sustaining and developing our business as the legal basis.
You have the right to object to your data being used for this purpose. If you'd like to opt out, please contact us using the details in the Contact section below. We will honour your request unless we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds that override your interests.
Sharing your data
We don't sell your personal data. Full stop.
We do sell aggregated analytics to business customers (as described above). While we take steps to de-identify this data, we treat it with the same care as personal data and give you the right to opt out.
We only share your data with the service providers described above, and in a few other limited situations: where the law requires it, to protect the safety of our users or the public, or in connection with a business transaction like a merger (in which case we'd let you know).
International transfers
Our primary data storage is in the United Kingdom. Some of our service providers may process data outside the UK. Where that happens, we make sure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the ICO or adequacy decisions.
How long we keep your data
We keep your data for as long as you have an active account, or as long as we need it to provide the service. Specifically:
- Account data — until you delete your account
- Your posts and contributions — until you or we remove them
- Technical and usage logs — for as long as reasonably necessary to improve the service and maintain security
- Business verification documents — for as long as reasonably necessary to maintain the integrity of business listings
After deletion, some data may linger in backups briefly, but we won't actively use it.
Cookies and tracking
We may use cookies and similar technologies to keep you logged in, remember your preferences, understand how people use the app, and deliver notifications. You can manage cookies through your device or browser settings, though turning some off may affect how the app works.
A detailed cookie notice will be made available within the app.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access your personal data — ask us for a copy of what we hold
- Correct anything that's wrong or incomplete
- Delete your data (with some legal exceptions)
- Restrict how we process your data in certain situations
- Port your data — get it in a format you can take elsewhere
- Object to processing based on legitimate interests, including marketing
- Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting anything we did before you withdrew it
To use any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We'll respond within one month.
You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk if you think we've got something wrong.
Deleting your account
You can request deletion of your account and personal data by contacting us at the details below. We'll process verified requests within one month.
Note: A self-service account deletion feature within the app is on our roadmap. We'll update this section once it's live.
Content removal
If you believe content posted on Seripe contains your personal data or image and you'd like it removed, please contact us at privacy@seri.pe. We aim to review and act on removal requests promptly.
How we protect your data
We take security seriously. We use measures such as encryption in transit, secure password hashing, and access controls on our systems to help protect your data.
No system is 100% secure, but we do our best. If a breach occurs, we'll notify you and the relevant authorities as required by law.

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll make the updated version available through the app. The "Last updated" date at the top tells you when it was last revised.
